CJ Jones Is Stating His Case
The state of Alabama has an abundance of good sized wings for years to come and Cairon "CJ" Jones happens to be one of them. At 6-foot-4, the Birmingham, Alabama native has come on strong during the spring travel season, picking up where he left off during the high school season with Central Park Christian. He plays his travel ball with Birmingham Storm Elite alongside 2016 counterpart Javien Williams as they complement each other well.
We have watched Jones improve in a years' time when he played with the Southern Phenoms last travel season. He has always had a nice pull-up game but lacked the confidence to put his game together. With time and maturity, Jones seems to have grown mentally and his game is coming together quite nicely. He gets good elevation on his pull-up and shoots the midrange efficiently. The three ball also serves him well with his ability to catch and shoot and is always on balance. His athleticism has always been there but he is using it a lot more now. Defensively, Jones has the capability of being a lock down defender and that is already starting to happen as his confidence continues to grow. He does a good job of playing the passing lanes, making it hard for his opponent to receive the ball off the pass.
Another aspect of his game that we like is his decision making. He hardly ever makes bad decisions because he picks and chooses his shots well. Sometimes he may seem a little passive because he doesn't force the issue but with no shot clock, no rush. When asked what he needs to improve on, Jones said "To improve my game, I think I need to get bigger and stronger and improve my IQ." Size and strength will be an easy fix for the slender wing once he gets to a program that can focus on his nutrition, strength and conditioning. Knowing that he needs to improve his IQ speaks volumes as he already plays with a pretty good IQ.
"It's been going really well, UT-Chattanooga offered after the second live period." Jones said when asked does he hold any offers. He also noted that Arkansas, Tennessee and Texas Rio Grande Valley (formerly Texas Pan Am) have all been in contact the last couple of weeks.
Jones is currently ranked at #15 in our class of 2016 player rankings but is likely to move up in the next rankings scheduled to release soon.
