Coaches Spotlight: Cedric LaneOur "Coaches Spotlight" shines down today on Cedric Lane, Head Coach of Wenonah High School. Coach Lane, who is originally from Atlanta, Georgia came to Birmingham in 1994 to attend Miles College as a member of the football team. He graduated in 1997 with a degree in English Education and embarked on a career in teaching, coaching and changing lives of young men and others who crossed his path. In 2001, Lane received his Masters in Education from Alabama State University.
The first coaching assignment for Lane was as an assistant coach. He served at South Atlanta High School (2001-2003). Competing and striving to lead his players to become champions is constantly on the mind of Coach Lane. Since arriving at Wenonah in 2004, Lane has implemented his up-tempo offense and full court trapping defense. These techniques have run his opponents out of the gym. Lane helped turn the program at Wenonah not only into one of the top teams in the city, state or region, but nationally. The Wenonah Dragons finished ranked high as 17th in the country according to MaxPreps.com. Since Coach Lane took over the basketball program, the Dragons have won 6 out of last 7 Area Championships, 4 Regional Championships & 3 State Titles. The state titles have come in 3 consecutive years. Coach Lane has another squad that is a strong contender for another title. If that isn't enough for you, then how about back-to-back nominations as "Best High School Coach" for Steve Harvey's Hoodie Awards. Lane was a finalist this year Entering his 10th year at Wenonah, Coach Lane has compiled a record of 212 win & 78 loses..Owning arguably the best backcourt in the state led by our #1 in 2014 5'10 PG Justin Coleman (Alabama commit) & our #19 in 2014 5'10 PG Cedric McGinnis they bring leadership, experience & scoring. The reigning 5A champs also returning starter 2014 6'3 W Marcus Williams (under the radar prospect), 2014 6'4 F Raymond Richardson & 2015 6'4 F Jaquan Nelson both of them were starters at different times last year & 2015 6'2 SG Kameron Hardrick who is one of the best shooters in the state. The Wenonah Dragons are primed again for another push at a state title. With Coach Lane at the head of the program Wenonah High has become a hotbed for prospects in the Birmingham City School System the last few years. The Dragons have 5 seniors this year with one already committed to play on the next level and I'm sure the rest will sign with a college soon.
