Kevin Morris: The Mid Major Attraction
Dothan, Alabama will get several visitors at Dothan High School come September. Visitors who may have never even passed through 'The Peanut Capital of the World" located just 18 miles north of Florida and 20 miles west of Georgia. These visitors aren't coming for the peanuts but for another attraction the city has to offer, Kevin Morris.
College coaches have been blowing Morris' cell phone up like crazy here lately. Mainly mid major programs as the Paul Millsap like Morris holds offers from Brown, Cornell, LA Tech, Louisiana-Monroe, Miami (OH), Middle Tennessee, Murray St, North Florida, Rice, Samford and Troy. High majors have been flirting also such as Georgia, Gonzaga, Oregon St and Vanderbilt.
With so many mid-to-high major programs looking at possibly adding the much improved four man, most of them won't make the cut once Morris trims his list after July. This time last year, the 6-foot-7 forward didn't have nearly as many offers, if any and was trying to find his stride heading into July with the Alabama Challenge. Now rolling with Southeast Elite this travel season, he seemed to have found what he was looking for and it has paid off. His relationship with travel team coach Chris Monroe has seemed to spark some confidence in Morris's ability. "As far as mid range and outside shots, I made a major jump and being to roll off screens I got a lot better." Said Morris about his improvement since last year this time.
We have also noticed and improvement, especially on the offensive end. His movement is so fluid now and he has the ability to start the break off rebounds. Morris has definitely improved with his shot and has even extended it out to three point land. One thing we noticed also was how much better he usually improves late May and entering July. It seems as if the break between high school playoffs and the grassroots season sets him back a bit coming into the spring.
His high academic status has also propelled him and made it easier for college coaches to the recruit the 3.5 GPA and 24 ACT student-athlete. Pending Morris's play in July during the live period, we can easily see some high majors extend offers but he can be an all conference guy at a good mid major conference.
