Kevion Nolan & Jamal Johnson Find Their New Homes
|
Samford got a likely commitment from 1A state champion Kevion Nolan of Sacred Heart Catholic. With Samford being the first program to offer the 6-foot-1 sharp shooter, it was obvious they would land him especially with the time and effort they put into him from day one. There were other schools that put their names into the discussion during the travel season such as Austin Peay, Jacksonville and UC-Santa Barbara after watching Nolan put up crazy 3-point FG numbers during the Nike EYBL with the Alabama Challenge.
Assistant coaches Sidney Ball and Jake Headrick have been doing a good job of landing in state studs that fit their mold in the last few years. Kevion Nolan is a kid who can learn to play the point guard position from Alabama transfer Justin Coleman as well as play off the ball which he is quite comfortable with as well. |
Memphis gets a big verbal commitment from 6-foot-4 combo guard Jamal Johnson of Spain Park High School. Johnson took an official visit to Memphis on September 3rd and decided 9 days later that was the best place for him. Throughout his high school career, Johnson was known as one of the best players in the class and he has always lived up to the hype. Being one of three sons of Buck Johnson, its not always easy living up to critics expectations but that's one thing Jamal has done and he has done it with poise and humility.
Johnson started the travel circuit with Atlanta Xpress in the Under Armour league before going back with Chris Monroe and Team Carroll in the Adidas Gauntlet where he obviously had more success. He teamed up with Alex Reese and Garrison Brooks among others to form a pretty good travel teams and one of the biggest on the Adidas Gauntlet circuit. He recently lost his high school teammate and Auburn commit Austin Wiley to transfer but that will only increase Johnson's scoring numbers as he will be relied on heavily and be a Mr. Basketball finalist.
Johnson also took an official visits to UAB. He had officials set up for Wake Forest and Georgia but didn't quite make it that far before making a decision.
