Samford Keeps Em' Home
By Kirven Lang
The Samford Bulldogs coaching staff has been on a tear on the recruiting trail lately and two of those additions are from Alabama. Triston Chambers (Cold Springs HS) and Justin Hopkins (JO Johnson HS) both made the decision to stay in state and take their talents to Birmingham, Alabama with Coach Scott Padgett.
It's safe to say that Samford assistant coach and Alabama native Jake Headrick put in a good amount of time recruiting both Chambers and Hopkins. With the pick up, Samford gets two different types of players. Chambers is more of threat from long range and has some swag and wiggle to his game. Hopkins is the gritty, tough, hard nosed wing who finishes well around the basket. The one thing they have in common is athleticism. Playing above the rim is something both players will surprise you with and catch a defender slipping and end up on a poster. There skill sets and athleticism will bring some versatility to the SOCON conference and push the bulldogs closer to the top.
"I felt that my skills fit the mold of Samford more than any other and I felt that Coach P and the staff were more in tune together than any other staff. They are just a great family to be apart of." said Chambers whose chose the Bulldogs over numerous mid major programs.

"The family feel was the thing that stood out to me. The coaching staff is cool and I felt like this was the best fit for me." said Hopkins when asked about his decision to choose Samford over Mercer and Middle Tennessee. Hopkins also had offers from Murray St, Tennessee Tech and Western Kentucky.
Both prospects had similar answers when it came to the family feel Samford's coaching staff brought to the table. So it may seem as if Chambers and Hopkins had been discussing attending the same school prior to the decision. "We talked about it during the summer once we realized mostly the same schools were recruiting us. It all came down to finding the right fit and it just so happens that Samford fits us both." Hopkins said when asked if they had planned on going to the same school.
Chambers and Hopkins join James Boone of Murray, Kentucky. Boone is a 6'5 shooting guard who can really knock it down from outside, mid-range and like Chambers, has some wiggle to his game. He also held offers from the some of the same schools as Chambers and Hopkins. Next year the SOCON might want to watch out for the Bulldogs especially with these three on the perimeter.
"Our recruiting class could be the best to come through Samford and we're gonna show it!"
