The Inaugural AHSAA Elite 100 Showcase Class Of 2022
With the new changes to the NCAA Recruiting Calendar, NFHS state associations are now allowed to host events where NCAA College Coaches can attend during the last two weekends of June. The AHSAA (Alabama High School Athletic Association) took the initiative in the inaugural year to host an individual showcase with arguably most of the top players the state has to offer regardless of class. Without further ado, here are some of the guys who stood out for the class of 2022.
Barry Dunning - 6'5" Small Forward - McGill-Toolen HS/Alabama Fusion 15U - special, special, special! Dunning has a chance to make some money one day playing this game. His athleticism is steadily increasing as he had some vicious dunks and even a nasty one over a defender during 3-on-3 action. His ball handling has really improved and was a monster in transition. He surprisingly showcased the ability to use ball screens and not as the screener. His jumper is improving but is more of a mid-range guy right now.
Tyrese Elliott - 6'1" Point Guard - Sparkman HS/Alabama Fusion 15U - the best point guard in the class and arguably the best player next to Dunning, Elliott has a very mature game. He doesn't get sped up and knows how to control the floor. His handle is exciting and has brought some flare back to the guard spot we've been missing for some time. Getting into tight spaces and finishing crafty layups is a forte of his while he can shoot the deep ball with ease. Athletically, Elliott has no problem trying defenders at the rim and is fearless when it comes to attempting one over an opponent. Alabama offered him after the camp to go along with offers from Ole Miss and UAB.
Will Shaver - 6'8" Power Forward - Oak Mountain HS/Pro One Select 15U - didn't have his best day but one thing you can't teach, and that's size. Shaver already has a large frame that will eventually tone up with some time in the weight room. He has a solid skill set and doesn't shy away from attempting to score. It's harder playing against smaller defenders as a big and that's one thing Shaver is figuring out but his upside is obviously high. Alabama offered after the Elite 100 Showcase to go along with an offer from UAB. He look's like Alex Reese and his first two offers come from Alabama & UAB who were Reese's final two, how ironic.
The class of 2020 looks like Point Guard University with Tyrese Elliott, Antonio Kite (6'0" - Anniston HS), Calen Lightford (5'8" - Sparkman HS), Jacari Lane (5'10" - Lee-Huntsville HS) and Preston Davis (6'2" - Homewood). All of these guys showed promise this past weekend. Antonio Kite has a shifty handle and can bounce. A top five player in the class for sure. Calen Lightford has a little Justin Coleman in him and will be exciting to see as the future unfolds. Jacari Lane is mature and knows how to play. He had some teammates that didn’t take the event seriously and overshadowed things. Preston Davis is an athlete and turned a few heads during 5-on-5 action. This class is probably my favorite of the kids that are currently in high school.
