The Inaugural AHSAA Elite 100 Showcase
Class of 2020
With the new changes to the NCAA Recruiting Calendar, NFHS state associations are now allowed to host events where NCAA College Coaches can attend during the last two weekends of June. The AHSAA (Alabama High School Athletic Association) took the initiative in the inaugural year to host an individual showcase with arguably most of the top players the state has to offer regardless of class. Without further ado, here are some of the guys who stood out for the class of 2020.
Jalen Myers - 6'7" Wing - Bob Jones HS/Team Carroll (Adidas Gauntlet) - was one of the most consistent players throughout the entire day. He has great size for a wing and the lefty shot it well from three and mid-range off the dribble and catch. He got to spots on the floor with ease using his savvy and whits while never being rattled. Myers has shown so much improvement and looks like a top ten prospect in the state again as he was in his younger days. In front of a host of coaches, Myers definitely increased his worth as he heads into July. He holds offers from Detroit, Southern Miss while Kennesaw St, SEMO and UAB are in the mix. Expect more to come in on Myers here soon.
Tony Toney - 6'0" Guard - Mae Jemison HS - came in with a name in North Alabama and left with a name throughout the state. Toney is an absolute animal on both ends of the floor. The kid can literally play all day and his motor is relentless. He has a strong body, finishes well through contact and is athletic as they come. He through down a windmill so hard yesterday, it looked like he just volleyball'd it through the nets. One of the most underrated parts of his game is his mid-range pull up off the bounce where he gets good elevation. He might not get much on the recruitment end from division-I schools but he can definitely play on the low major level without a doubt.
Andres Burney - 6'8" Forward - Pike County HS/Alabama Fusion-Jones - the biggest stock riser of the day, Burney had a coming out party and put everyone on notice. Long and athletic, he surprised everyone with his skill set as he handled the ball well in transition while making some skillful moves on the block. One of the most impressive moves he made on the block was when he pivoted middle then saw the double coming and spun back quickly away from the double without traveling leading to a bucket. Defensively, he blocked every dunk attempt against him and became the Dikembe Mutombo of the event. Burney has only heard from Alcorn St but expect more suitors to call after a strong performance.
Cameron Boozer - 6'9" Power Forward - Lanett HS/Team Knight (Adidas Gauntlet) - made some really athletic plays around the rim as he caught a couple of put backs and slammed them home with authority. He has a college ready physique and finished well around the rim. His mid range stroke looks good. He's a tad bit bigger than his twin brother Zameron but both are big time at athletes. Kennesaw St recently offered them both.
Mark Sears - 6'0" Point Guard - Muscle Shoals/Alabama Fusion (Nike EYBL) - solidified himself as the top point guard in the class during the spring and picked up where he left off. He got to the rim at will finishing with either hand while showcasing his athleticism with dunks and lob attempts. His stroke from three was solid and he made the game look so easy especially on the defensive end. UAB is recruiting him the hardest right now.
Cole Larue - 6'8" Power Forward - McGill-Toolen HS/Hawks Elite - the most skilled big in the state. Larue used an array of moves on the offensive end to score including a one legged "Dirk" fade away. He has good foot work on the block and handled the ball fairly well in transition. Larue can shoot it as well from mid range and three. He isn't blessed with major athleticism but with a summer on a college campus, some of that can change as well as his body. Kennesaw St had him in on an unofficial visit the day after the camp.
Austin Harvell - 6'5" Small Forward - East Limestone/Alabama Fusion (Nike EYBL) - looked like he was back to his explosive self making some of the most athletic plays from drills to 5-on-5 action. His powerful dunks put everyone on notice as he was a big threat to posterize anyone. His three ball was falling as he would knock 2-3 down per game. His recruitment has dropped off a bit but it will pick back up as he has fully recovered from his injury.
Geraldo Lane - 6'3" Guard - Columbia - a sleeper of the class and is really long and athletic. He reminds me of Duece Bello who went to Baylor out of college and finished at East Tennessee State. His crafty handle allowed him to get to spots on the floor while using his athleticism to finish above the rim with ease. Most didn't notice him at camp as he may not get much pub, but Lane is definitely a sleeper in the class.
Mikey McIntosh - 6'6" Forward - Muscle Shoals/Alabama Fusion (Nike EYBL) - was one of the most active players all day. His quick twitch muscles allowed him to make plays around the rim with second chance points. He handled the ball well, especially in transition while using his high motor to take rebounds coast to coast.
Antwan Burnett - 6'4" Shooting Guard - Sidney Lanier HS/Nighrydas Elite (Nike EYBL) - hasn't played well all of June and struggled the first game of the day but got into a trash talking session and absolutely caught fire the last two games. His three ball was really falling and he used a variety of moves to get to spots on the floor. His explosiveness isn't there right now as he is recovering from an injury. South Alabama had two coaches in attendance to see Burnett including Head Coach Richie Riley.
Demarcus Beckwith - 6'4" Small Forward - Florence HS - a high major football recruit but a pretty good basketball player as well. Beckwith is skilled, a strong athletic finisher and shot it fairly well with good form. His vertical athleticism was impressive to say the least to go along with a complete offensive arsenal as he knifed through defenders to get to the rim.
De'Marquiese "Duke" Miles - 6'1" Point Guard - Robert E. Lee HS/Team Carroll (Adidas Gauntlet) - is one of the craftiest guards in the class and his high IQ for the game is a beauty to watch. He was never rattled, knew where everyone was on the court as he made play after play off the bounce. This class has some solid point guards who are under recruited and Miles is one of them.
Dane Harding - 6'6" Shooting Guard - Albertville HS/Pro One Select - if you are looking for a specialist, Harding is your guys. He really filled it up from three as a catch and shoot guy. He has a good looking stroke and knows how to play the game and get open.
